Artist Talk mit Wael Shawky

Have you slept? That was Doris Krystof’s first question during her conversation with Wael Shawky. The curator of the exhibition “Wael Shawky: Cabaret Crusades” had every reason to wonder. For only on the eve of the artist’s talk did the filming – which lasted an entire month – of Part III of the marionette epoch finally came to a close in the Grabbe Halle of the K20.

In his artist’s talk, Shawky – who was born in Alexandria – shared extensive details concerning the cinematographic work, realized in Düsseldorf with a large international team: a novelty for the museum as well. He also shed light on the origins and development of his 3-part work, the first 2 parts of which received much acclaim at the most recent documenta. At the conclusion of his conversation with Doris Krystof, held in the packed lower level of the Schmela Haus, the artist also responded to a number of questions from the audience.

The striking backdrop for the conversation was a series of images, including numerous shots of the film set, the marionettes, and the production crew. Some of these photographs, taken in October at the K20, have already been published in #32 under the heading “Making of”:
